It may have been outshot 20-1, but no one can take away from host Brandywine how hard it played before falling to rival Buchanan 1-0 in Lakeland Conference soccer Monday.

The Bobcats, and especially goalie Alexandra Wilson, turned in a strong performance against the Bucks.

Buchanan’s Alyssa Rausch came up with the match’s only goal in the 13th minute off an assist from Maddy Vorrath.

But from that point on, Wilson and the Brandywine defense kept Buchanan to adding to its lead. Sometimes in spectacular fashion.

Wilson had two sensational stops in the final 40 minutes to keep the lead at just one goal.

The first one came in the 59th minute as she came sliding out of the goal to take a ball away from a charging Vorrath.

The second came in the 71st minute when she batted a rocket of a shot over the top of the goal. That led to three consecutive corner kicks for the Bucks that never got near Wilson thanks to the Brandywine defense.

“I thought she played a great game,” Brandywine coach Evan Winkler said of his keeper. “If she wasn’t back there I think they would have had a couple of more goals. She also got a lot of help from her defense, especially Angelika Anderson.”

Buchanan coach Brian Pruett said that he felt as if his team “escaped” with a win.

“We may have had more shots and controlled the ball more, but we just couldn’t finish,” he said. “They (Brandywine) always seemed to have someone there to make our shots a little tougher than they had to be. I thought they played great and I feel very fortunate to get out of here with a win.”
