Cassopolis Public Schools finished interviews Wednesday afternoon with prospective Ross Beatty high school principals.
From eight initial candidates, one canceled and another found a job, leaving the district with six hopefuls, including David VanLue of Lewis Cass Intermediate School District.
Supt. Greg Weatherspoon said, after completing interviews with Ronald Evans of Jenison and Robert Sieko of St. Joseph, who is curriculum director in Michigan City, Ind., the district hopes to make a school visit, then announce its selection May 14.
The principal will succeed Tracy Hertsell, who becomes superintendent upon Weatherspoon’s retirement at the end of the school year.

Pending cuts
Weatherspoon also said Wednesday the athletic director’s position will continue to be part-time following Robert Guse’s resignation.
Guse had gone to part-time following football season.
Like other areas of the budget, athletics will be cut 15 percent as part of the effort to close a $1.34 million deficit, Weatherspoon said.
The board’s three-member athletic committee will be conferring with the community on those $27,000 cuts, which could mean the end to some sports programs.
“Something has to go,”  Weatherspoon said. “There are a lot of vignettes to examine.”
