A record-setting six-goal performance by senior Breanna Williams helped the Dowagiac soccer team remain unbeaten Monday evening.

Williams, who had a had trick in the first half, scored three more in the final 37 minutes as the Chieftains blanked visiting Berrien Springs 8-0.

The match was stopped by the eight-goal mercy rule.

Williams scored goals in the eighth, 25th, 36th, 41st, 44th and 77th minutes. Her first and fifth goals were scored on penalty kicks.

“Bre did real well attacking and scoring,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “She has become a lot more confident in her dribbling ability, especially this year. On her last goal she took it, cut it and turned in. She went through two or three people and placed it with nice controlled goal. She’s maturing a lot. I’m proud of her.”

Senior Kelsie Primley scored the other two goals for the Chieftains and she made it 7-0 with back-to-back scores in the 47th and 48th minute.

Despite the extremely strong wind, Williams was pleased with the way he team kept the ball out of the air and attacked the goal.

“With this wind it was a good day to keep the ball on the ground,” Williams said. “We did a good job of that.”

The Chieftains will continue a busy week Wednesday when they jump into Wolverine Conference action against visiting South Haven. Dowagiac will then host Buchanan Friday night.
