Reading with children at a young age has been shown to generate an interest in learning, a creative spirit and a confidence in academic ability later in life. It improves children’s chances for success in school and beyond and also provides an opportunity for families to bond with one another.

In an effort to promote the importance of reading with children of all ages, this month I traveled to several elementary schools throughout Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties to read to young students during “March is Reading Month.”

I was happy and honored to have the chance to share my experiences with reading and encourage young minds to increase their potential and aptitude through lifelong learning experiences.

National Reading Month began 13 years ago in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. It has become a tradition throughout the nation – one that I am proud to have continued throughout my time in the Legislature.

Learning to read at a young age increases a student’s ability to remember facts and gain the knowledge needed to succeed in today’s global economy.

I believe our students are the future leaders of this great state and as parents we need to provide them with every opportunity to fuel their excitement about reading. My wife and I have three children. Our oldest is in fourth grade, and we read to our kids every night.

The goal of Reading Month is to foster a love of reading in all children. I encourage all Southwest Michigan parents to help accomplish this goal throughout the year by reading with their children as they grow and learn.

A small investment of time each night will pay enormous dividends in the future success of Michigan’s children and our entire state.
