Star publishes last Saturday issue this weekend

This Saturday, March 31, marks the last day readers will read the Niles Daily Star print edition on a Saturday. Content will continue to be updated on the nilesstar.com website every day of the week.

The move comes in anticipation of the U.S. Postal Service, which delivers the Star, canceling Saturday delivery.

Leader Publications Publisher Michael Bennett says the change will allow reporters to gather stronger content the other five days of the week.

The elimination of the Saturday paper comes during a wave of changes at Leader Publications.

A new redesign of the Daily Star, the Dowagiac Daily News, Edwardsburg Argus and Cassopolis Vigilant in tabloid format is set to launch Monday.

More color pages, additional local news, a sharper design and more graphics are among the changes to the products.

A new “portal” website, which will feature news from all coverage areas, will also debut next month. The site, www.leaderpub.com, will also have a link to www.offthewater.com, offering arts and entertainment news for Michiana.

What’s different?

New look:  The Niles Daily Star, Dowagiac Daily News, Cassopolis Vigilant and Edwardsburg Argus are switching from broadsheet format to tabloid. A new design with more graphics and color pages will be included in the changes.

No more Saturday edition: The Niles Daily Star will no longer print a Saturday edition in anticipation of the U.S. Postal Service canceling Saturday delivery. Readers can still go online for news on Saturdays.

One-stop website:  Leader Publications is consolidating all of its news content from all its publications to one website, www.leaderpub.com. For entertainment news from throughout Michiana, visit offthewater.com.

More community-generated content: The newspapers will print columns and features written by community leaders and residents throughout the week. There will also be plenty of room for reader-submitted photos.
