Dowagiac Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports the city Police Department investigated an incident Thursday at the middle school involving a possible weapon being brought to school.
DMS staff was advised at 8:45 a.m. Thursday of a possible handgun brought to school by a student.
Staff contacted the DPD school truancy officer immediately who responded to the school along with other officers.
School staff located an air-soft handgun in an eighth-grade student’s locker. The student was identified and eventually turned over to the student’s parents.
There were no threats made in conjunction with the air-soft gun and at no time was the weapon brandished or used in a threatening manner, Atkinson said.
The 13-year-old will be petitioned into Cass County Probate Court pending a review of possible charges by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police withheld the juvenile’s name.
