An 11-year-old special needs child is in critical condition after family members pulled him out of an above-ground pool Tuesday evening in Niles Township.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was still in critical condition Wednesday morning at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Berrien County Detective Greg Sanders said the boy fell into an uncovered above-ground pool that contained some water. Police say the incident appears to be accidental.

Berrien County dispatchers received a 911 call from a person reporting a possible drowning at 2742 Paul St. in Niles Township at 5:44 p.m.

Responding Berrien County deputies found the boy had fallen into a pool and was pulled out by family members. Police could not say how long the boy had been underwater.

The boy was transported to Lakeland Medical Center by the Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service before being taken to Memorial Hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
