A two-year renovation project of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Niles should wrap up next month.

Stephanie Sobol, administrative assistant for the parish, said the interior repairs and upgrades of the building will be complete in time for Easter Sunday services.

The first phase of the more than $300,000 project, which included restoration of the steeple, was completed in 2010. The second phase focuses on the body of the church, including painting and plaster repair of the nave, balcony and sacristy, and will be done in April.

The congregation of more than 700 families has been holding Mass and other functions in the gymnasium while work is being done inside the church.

Sobol said everyone is looking forward to seeing the finished product and moving back inside the church.

“It will bring praise and glory to God,” she said.

The cornerstone of the building, located at 203 S. Lincoln Ave., was laid in 1866 and the church was completed in 1890 with the construction of the gothic tower. St. Mary’s is under the leadership of the Rev. David Otto.
