Daily Star file photos Hundreds of parents lined up last year to enroll their students in the Niles New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy. New Tech will be accepting new applicants at 8 a.m. Saturday. The first 75 students to apply are guaranteed a slot.

The forecast for Saturday morning in Niles calls for temperatures in the low 30s with a decent chance of snow β€” not exactly the weather in which to be standing outside.

Despite that, Niles Community Schools officials are expecting more than 100 parents to be lined up outside the high school hoping to enroll their child in Niles New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy.

Limited openings

One hundred and thirty-five slots are available for incoming freshmen for the 2012-13 school year. The first 75 students to turn in an application are guaranteed a slot. After that, the remaining 60 slots will be filled through a stratified lottery.

β€œIt will be a fun morning,” Niles Supt. Richard Weigel said.

There are a few rules.

An adult must accompany each student, and only one application per adult will be accepted.

Students and parents can begin lining up at 5 a.m. outside the 14th Street entrance to Niles New Tech, 1441 Eagle St. The first-come, first-serve process will begin at 8 a.m.

School officials will be on hand to facilitate the process.

Breakfast served

About a dozen current Niles New Tech students will be present to greet parents and potential students. Coffee, juice and waffles will be available. The admission process will run from 8 to 10 a.m.

Those who fall outside the first 75 students can still apply.

The deadline for applying is 3 p.m. March 9.

Students will be notified of their enrollment status during the week of March 12.
