Suspect shot by police dies

A home invasion suspect shot Monday afternoon after knifing a police officer is dead, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office.

The name of the suspect is not being released pending notification of relatives.

Berrien County police confronted the suspect near a home on Wedgewood Dr. in South Bend when the suspect cut an officer with a knife. The officer then shot the suspect.

Police were responding to a tip that a person wanted on a felony warrant out of Michigan was at a hotel on State Road 933. The suspect was expected to be armed.

Police spotted the suspect’s vehicle and the suspect at the hotel at around 3:30 p.m. Monday. Police followed the suspect into the parking lot of the Pay N Pakit near State Line Road in St. Joseph County, Ind. The suspect exited the vehicle, headed east on Wedgewood Dr. and attempted to enter a home.

At that point Berrien County police confronted the suspect.

The officer is expected to be okay.
