Brawley on All-MAC academic team

MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan University junior Lindsey Dulude was one of 18 Mid-American Conference standouts to earn volleyball academic All-MAC honors for the 2011 season.

Juniors Samantha Brawley and Val DeWeerd, along with sophomores Kelly Maxwell and Jenna Coates, were named to the Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention Team.

Dulude, a language arts major with a 3.96 grade-point average, earns a spot on the squad for the first time in her career. The outside hitter was named to two all-tournament teams, while finishing the season third on the team in kills per set with 2.62.

She appeared in 125 out of the team’s 128 total sets and was second on the team in aces with 26.

This is also the first time Brawley, DeWeerd, Maxwell and Coates have earned academic honors. Brawley is a 3.79 GPA child development major. She finished the year with a .947 serve receive percentage while averaging 1.83 digs per set. DeWeerd, a 3.63 GPA human resource management major, finished the season averaging 1.79 kills per set.

Maxwell, who owns a 3.51 GPA, led the team with 1,314 total assists. She is currently sixth on the CMU single-season assist chart and finished second in the MAC averaging 11.45 assists per set in league play. She was named to one all-tournament team and was member of the MAC All-Tournament Team.

Coates, who carries a 3.54 GPA, is fourth on the single-season digs chart with 544. She led the team defensively with a 4.25 digs-per-set average and finished fifth in the conference averaging 4.58 digs-per-set average and finished fifth in the conference averaging 4.58 digs per set in league play.

Coates was a member of three all-tournament teams.

The academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests.

First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Faculty athletic representatives vote for this award.
