Dowagiac grapplers swept

THREE RIVERS — The Dowagiac wrestling team was swept by host Three Rivers and Vicksburg Wednesday night in Wolverine Conference action.

The Chieftains were defeated by the Wildcats 57-17 and by the Bulldogs 54-21.

Winning matches against Three Rivers were Jacob Worthington, Matt Lyle, Anthony Daisey and Daniel Crandall.

Worthington decisioned Matt Rose 7-5, Lyle blanked Harvey Allen 10-0 and Crandall defeated Kyle Booty 14-5.

Daisey pinned Jake Bowers in 5:41.

Against Vicksburg, Worthing received a forfeit, Lyle blanked Jacob Windel 7-0, Daisey pinned Asher Elsworth in 36 seconds and Tom Smith picked up a forfeit.

“Our freshmen continue to show improvement as well as lots of effort on the mat,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We have a bright future with these young men.

“Jacob Worthington had a great match with Matt Rose and came away with a big win for him in terms of the conference. Matt Lyle continues to pile up the wins as he improves to 20-5 on the season.

The Chieftain wrestling team heads to Quincy this weekend for a tournament.

Middle School wrestling

The Dowagiac Middle School wrestling team opened its season against Coloma, Berrien Springs and Eau Claire Wednesday night.

“We wrestled well for not having a lot of mat time,” Dowagiac coach Andy Crawley said. “We love the wrestlers’ determination and effort. We will get back to work and improve. Our goal is to get better every time we take the mat.”

Winning two matches for the Chieftains was Brandon Hatch.

Winning a match were Nathan Tackitt, Colin Hassle, Leo Edwards, William Edwards, Dakota Luna, Jared Hatch, Scott Hassle, Zac Checkley, Seth Fear, Blake Slabaugh and Justin McCambridge.
