SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Niles wrestling team had quite a day at the Northern Indiana Conference Super Duals at Adams High School Saturday.

The tournament got started an hour later than scheduled due to heavy snowfall that blanketed the area Friday and Saturday.

The Vikings finished second in Pool B after going 4-1 on the day.

Niles fell to South Bend Riley in the championship match 46-14.

But that did not take away from the accomplishments of the day. In the history of the NIC Super Duals, Mishawaka (Ind.) had never been defeated. Riley knocked off the Cavemen in the opening round and then Niles duplicated the feat in the fourth round, winning 34-33 on criteria.

The match was decided on the sixth criteria — post pins.

The Vikings had three individual champions in Darek Mills, Donte Stevens and Fritzel Findeisen, who captured the 120, 145 and 152 pound weight divisions respectively. Niles wrestled under Indiana weight classification rules.

“Kids wrestled well,” Niles coach Todd Hesson said. “It was a huge upset beating Mishawaka. Freshman Josh Dayhuff fought of his back the while match and lost by a tech (technical fall). That turned out to be the difference in the match.

“We lost to a solid Riley team with a lot of experience and we may have been a little flat after the big Mishawaka win.”

Donte Stevens, Darek Mills and Fritzel Findeisen all went 5-0 on the day. Ryan Casey was 4-1 as the Vikings improved to 13-3 on the season.
