CASSOPOLIS — A Niles man got caught possessing marijuana and driving on a suspended license when the Berrien County bomb squad was summoned to Southwestern Michigan College’s Niles campus June 7 to investigate a suspicious briefcase found sitting in the parking lot.
Scott Alan Cauffman, 42, of 2666 Huntly Rd., wasn’t helped in Cass County Circuit Court Friday by four prior felony convictions and 24 misdemeanors.
“Your criminal record is extremely substantial,” Circuit Judge Michael E. Dodge said.
Cauffman felt “ashamed of my past. I’ve been doing this too long.”
He pleaded guilty Sept. 28 to the two counts, for which he will spend 365 days in jail with credit for one already served.
