Get a little smarter at Fernwood events

Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve offers fall classes for a variety of ages. Here is a listing of events, ranging from nature walks to lectures and book signing.

Knee-high Naturalists:  Spiders is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Children ages 4 and 5 explore the woods and gardens of Fernwood to learn about spiders. Dress for walking the trails. Registration required. Fee is $8 for members,  $10 for others.

Nature Saplings: Squirrels is 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 18.
Children ages 2½ to 3½ accompanied by an adult can enjoy an introduction to nature. This session will be about squirrels. Dress for walking the trails. Registration required. Fee is $4 for members (child/adult pair) and $5 for others.

Railway closes: The Railway Garden is decorated for fall and touches of Halloween, so come out to see it before it closes Oct. 30. If you are able to volunteer a few hours in the Railway Garden this month, call Judi Jason.

Duck Migration is 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Join naturalist Wendy Jones at the Three Oaks Sewage Ponds for a lesson on duck identification.
Dress for cool breezes across open fields.
Fee is $12 for members, $15 for others. Register by noon on Friday

Make a Bulb Dish Garden is 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Learn the basics of forcing flowerbulbs indoors by creating a dish gardent.
Bring a container, such as a bowl, small wooden box or basket. Fee is $32 for members, $40 for others.

Sharon Beals Lecture and Book Signing Event is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21. Meet the artist from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 22.
The large-format, high-resolution nest photos by California artist Sharon Beals are on display in Fernwood’s gallery through Nov. 13.
The exhibit contains 30 bird nest photographs captured against a dramatic black background using specimen nests and eggs, dating from the 1800s to present day, from California museum collections. Beals’ work has been featured in Audobon Magazine and Scientific American and can be found in private and public collections.
Beals compiled her nest photos into a book, “Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds That Built Them,” released in the spring and available for purchase in Fernwood’s gift shop.
The fee for the lecture is $25 for Fernwood and Berrien Birding Club Members and $30 for others.

Holiday rentals: Fernwood offers a variety of facilities for parties, business meetings, retreats, showers, receptions, weddings and other social gatherings.

Sculpture exhibit: Have you met Lorenzo? The whimsical steel sculpture if one of 10 at Fernwood. Curated by Fr. Austin I. Collins, CSC, Professor of Sculpture at the University of Notre Dame, the installation opened in June and will continue through  Labor Day 2013.
