Bobcat tennis wins share of first conference title

The Brandywine tennis program has accomplished something this season that no other Bobcat team has ever done.
They won a share of a conference championship.
On Monday night the Bobcats won the Lakeland Conference tournament after one weather delay, one site change, and a couple of marathon matches. The win gave them a share of the overall conference title with Edwardsburg who finished tied for second at the tournament and had a better regular season conference record.
Brandywine coach Dave Sidenbender had trouble describing how proud he was of his team’s huge accomplishment. “I can’t even comprehend this. This is my fifth year here and my first four years were really tough.  I don’t think they even have a tennis banner in our gym. So, to have this happen is something else,” he said.
The Bobcats had one singles player and two doubles teams win the conference tournament titles for their individual flights.
1. Singles player Breno Moreira won his flight in a match that started at Edwardsburg and ended at the Lakeland Athletic Club in Niles. He beat Berrien Springs’ Nate Pagel 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 to claim the championship. The 2. Doubles team of Chance Smith and Tanner Bourdon beat Bridgman’s Dominic Milano and Brandon Mensinger 6-4, 6-4 in their championship flight. The Bobcats’ 4. Doubles team of Stuart Pearman and Nick Wright outlasted Edwardsburg’s Austin Horvath and Linden Jones 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 for their conference title.
The Bobcats were in line to win a third championship doubles flight but due to the length of the match and a previous engagement for of one of the Brandywine players, the Bobcats had to forfeit despite holding a lead in the match.
“I’m really proud of this team and how they’ve played all year,” Sidenbender said.
It looks like a tennis conference championship banner is forthcoming in the Brandywine gym now.
