Chieftains win tourney title

A pair of lopsided victories gave the Dowagiac soccer team the championship of its own Chieftain Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Chieftains defeated Cassopolis 6-1 in the opening round, while Lawton toppled the Rangers 4-1 to advance to the championship match.
Another six goals against the Blue Devils allowed the Chieftains to take possession of the championship trophy.
Dowagiac blanked Lawton 6-0 in the title match.

The Chieftains scored four goals in the second half to turn a close match into an easy victory over Cassopolis in the first match.
Alvaro Scherer and Leo Ramirez both scored in the first 30 minutes for Dowagiac.
In second half, Tony Solis, Hazen McMeeken and Craig Zebell all found the back of the net. Zebell had a pair of goals.
Cassopolis’ lone goal came on a penalty kick for a handball in the box by Dowagiac. George Samadder picked up the goal.

The Chieftains scored four of their six goals in the opening half against the Blue Devils.
McMeeken opened the scoring, while Scherer, Zebell and Nate Michael also scored.
Zebell had a pair of unassisted second half goals to pick up a hat trick.
The Chieftains held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal in the match.
