Brandywine to recall 6 teachers

Six full-time Brandywine teachers have been called back to work. The district had laid off eight in April.

Brandywine Community Schools have recalled six of the eight full-time teachers that were laid off in April, Supt. John Jarpe announced at Monday’s school board meeting.

The school board also approved the 2011-2012 budget by a unanimous vote Monday.

Jarpe said he doesn’t expect to be able to recall the two remaining high school teachers on layoff status, unless there is a large spike in enrollment at the high school.

“But to have only two people on layoffs is much better than expected given the circumstances,” Jarpe said.

Those circumstances include a 12 percent increase in insurance premiums, a projected decrease in enrollment by 23 students and a $470 decrease per student in state aid.

Jarpe said the district was able to recall the six teachers because school officials found out they were able to carry over some unused Title I money from this past year into next year. Most of that money will go to fund full-day kindergarten, Jarpe said.

Even with the two teacher layoffs, the district had a $675,919 deficit that had to be filled by taking money from its fund balance, leaving the district with about $3 million in fund equity.

“It’s nothing you want to do year after year,” Jarpe said about dipping into the fund balance. “But this year we can afford to do it.”
