Niles finishes third in Big 16 golf standings

CENTREVILLE — The second and final day of the Big 16 Conference Golf Tournament ran 45 minutes longer than expected on Monday.

The players had to be pulled from the course at Island Hills as a thunderstorm, which included hail, stopped the tournament just a couple of holes from completely.

After a 45 minute delay, the final few holes were completed and Battle Creek Lakeview took home the prize as it captured the second round of play with a score of 302.

Battle Creek Harper Creek was second at 308 and Portage Cental third with a 321. Marshall also shot 321 to take fourth and Niles finished at 322 to finish fifth on the day.

Lakeview won the overall conference tournament championship with a two-day total of 599. Harper Creek was second at 630, while Niles finished third wtih a total of 632. Portage Northern (734) and Portage Central (645) rounded out the top five teams.

Lakeview’s Matt Garland was the conference medalist with a total of 144. Niles’ Chris Noble finished third with a 147.

On Monday, Noble shot even par 72. The Vikings also got an 82 from Brett Phillips, a pair of 84s from John Schrader and Jared Langmeyer, an 86 from Sam Clark and a 100 from Dominic Wayland.

In the final Big 16 West Division indiviudal standings, Noble was medalist with an average of 36.8. Niles’ Phillips earned honorable mention as he finished ninth overall with an average of 43.34.
