Correshia Rodgers scored a pair of goals and had a pair of assists as the Dowagiac soccer team blanked visiting Coloma Friday night 8-0.

The Chieftains, the winners of their first seven matches this season without a loss, led 7-0 at halftime. The match was halted by the mercy rule in the 23 minutes into the second half.

Sammy Mathews opened the scoring for the Chieftains in the second minute off an assist from Lauren Krueger.

Rodgers then scored two of the next three goals and assisted on the third goal as Dowagiac opened up a 4-0 lead just 24 minutes into the non-league match.

Rodgers scored in the 17th and 24th minutes. Paloma Medina and Bre Williams assisted on her two goals. Keslie Primley scored in the 21st minute off the assist from Rodgers.

Also scoring in the first half for the Chieftains were Krueger (26th minute) Kelsey Bannow (30th) and Amanda Hassle (38th). Rodgers assisted on the Krueger goal.

Christina Preston ended the match with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Dowagiac outshot Coloma 18-3. Alyssa Fritz had the three saves for Dowagiac as she picked up the shutout.

“We had people who don’t get a lot of playing time in,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “They work hard in practice to help make the other players better, so it’s nice that they get an opportunity to play. Once we started to play possession soccer we looked good. We made some good runs. It was good to be able to work on touches and turns and playing with our heads up when we make passes, which is what we have been working on in practice.”

Dowagiac will travel to Vicksburg tonight for a key Wolverine Conference match with the Bulldogs.
