ST. JOSEPH — Last Wednesday, March 23, three New Buffalo High School students were fishing on the bank of the Galien River east of Red Arrow in Berrien County’s New Buffalo Township when one of the youth’s line became snagged on an object.

After dislodging his line and reeling it in, the youth observed a bone was attached to his lure.

The youth secured the bone and on the next day took the bone to school and had a teacher examine it.

The teacher took possession of the bone, which was later turned over to police.

The bone was presented to Chief Berrien County Medical Examiner Robert Clark for examination.

The bone was determined to be a human humerous bone.

Tuesday, March 29, the Berrien County Sheriff’s dive team began to dive in the area the youths indicated they located the bone.

Numerous other bones, also deemed to be human, were discovered.

At this time it appears that the bones are of one person.

It is unknown any further as far as race, sex or age until the bones are further examined.

It is also unknown how long long the remains had been in the water, but authorities report it does appear they had been in the water for an extended amount of time.

This investigation is continuing and further details will be released as they are known.
