Bridgman nips Eddies

Bridgman took over first place in the Lakeland Conference Friday night with a 66-60 win over previously undefeated Edwardsburg.

The Bees grabbed first place in the boys’ basketball race by half a game as it handed the Eddies their first league loss.

Edwardsburg (10-6, 8-1) grabbed an early 17-15 lead and built it into a six-point advantage by halftime, 36-33.

Bridgman (14-2, 9-1 Lakeland) stormed back in the third quarter and forced a 45-45 deadlock heading into the final eight minutes of play by outscoring the Eddies 15-9.

In the extra session, the Bees scored 21 points, while holding the Eddies to 15.

Connor and Cameron Magro led the charge as the two combined for 36 of Bridgman’s 66 points. Connor scored a game-high 20 points, while Cameron added 16.

Kyle Dale and Josh Kozinski tried to match the Magros, combining for 34 of the Eddies’ 60 points. Dale finished with 18 and Kozinski 16. Edwardsburg also got eight points from Marcus Albrecht and seven points from Chad Tevlin.

The Eddies are at Brandywine tonight for another Lakeland Conference contest.

The final hurdle before the big showdown Friday night for first place in the Lakeland Conference was cleared by the Edwardsburg girls’ basketball team.

The Eddies blew by visiting Bridgman Friday night 43-19 to remain one game behind league-leading Brandywine.

Edwardsburg (15-3, 10-1 Lakeland) got off to a bit of a slow start, trailing the Bees 13-10 after one quarter of play.

But the Eddies rebounding, shutting out Bridgman in the second quarter to take an 18-13 advantage at halftime.

It was all Edwardsburg in the final 16 minutes as the Eddies outscored Bridgman 25-6 in the second half.

Rachel Vite scored 13 points to lead the Eddies, who also got 11 points from Sarah D’Amico and seven points from Mariah Murphy.

Niki Strefling had eight points for Bridgman.

Visiting Plainwell spoiled the regular season finale for the Edwardsburg girls’ basketball team as it edged the Eddies 45-44 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

Edwardsburg (15-4) led 12-11 after one quarter of play and 25-19 at the intermission.

The Trojans (12-6) outscored the Eddies 13-8 in the third quarter to grab a 32-31 heading into the final period.

Plainwell and Edwardsburg both scored 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans held on for the one-point victory.

Rachel Vite had a game-high 20 points to lead the Eddies. Mariah Murphy added 11.

Kristen Graves paced Plainwell with 10 points.
