CASSOPOLIS — Maybe next time she will just insure her vehicles.

After crashing her car in her garage and damaging two vehicles last July, Patricia Miller, 46, of Cassopolis, purchased an insurance policy from Esurance.

After that, she called the company and told an agent she had damaged two vehicles.

The agent investigated the claim and found out the accident occurred before she purchased the policy.

The attempted insurance fraud earned Miller a 60-day jail term and one year of probation at her sentencing in Cass County Circuit Court Friday.

She was also ordered to pay restitution of $1,090.

Judge Michael Dodge said after the insurance agent discovered the fraudulent claim, Miller created “an elaborate lie” to try to avoid legal problems.

Assistant Prosecutor Tiffiny Vohwinkle said Miller has “a long history of theft by lying” and agreed with a jail sentence.

“She obviously hasn’t learned her lesson,” Vohwinkle said.

Miller claimed she is suffering from pancreatic cancer but offered no documentation at sentencing.

Dodge said if the jail nurse feels she needs treatment, he would be willing to reconsider his sentence.
