CASSOPOLIS — It’s difficult to pick up a felony while one is already in prison, but a Dowagiac man found a way.

Kory Misiewicz, who pleaded guilty to attempted extortion, was sentenced to 18 months to 10 years in prison Friday in Cass County Circuit Court.

His sentence will run consecutive to his current one, which is for armed robbery offenses.

In February last year, Misiewicz called his former girlfriend and co-defendant in the armed robberies and demanded money he claimed she owes him.

He then threatened to talk to her parole officer if she didn’t repay him, knowing it was a violation of her parole to be talking to him.

Defense attorney Lawrence Quigley said his client was just “looking for support in a foolish way.”

But Misiewicz, 30, said he was just after the money and lost his cool.

“I got upset because she wouldn’t pay me,” he said, adding that more prison time “won’t help me any.”

Assistant Prosecutor Tiffiny Vohwinkle cited Misiewicz’s violent criminal history as a reason for her recommendation for a 30-month sentence.
