BUCHANAN — It didn’t take long for the fans to know that the Brandywine girls’ varsity basketball team was going to wrap up its second Lakeland Conference title in as many years.

The Bobcats cruised to a 64-35 Lakeland Conference win over host Buchanan Friday night to improve their league record to 11-0 and move to 18-1 with one regular season remaining on the schedule.

“It is exciting when a school is around 50 years and prior to last season they won two,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood stated about his team’s league clinch. “Now we are back-to-back Lakeland champs and that is pretty exciting. They are a pleasure to coach and every day you come to work and it is exciting to be around those kids. It is a special group of girls that we have right now.”

Brandywine raced out to a 22-5 first quarter lead and extended that to a 38-9 advantage at the break. Buchanan had their opportunities to stay with the Bobcats but just couldn’t get the ball to ball through the net in the first half.

It was the Brandywine post game that was hot as Lauren Leonard scored a game-high 22 points and Kelsey Prestly added 16.

The Lady Bucks had no answer in stopping the inside game of the Bobcats. Brandywine had several second chances on its missed shots and limited the Lady Bucks by dominating the boards. Leonard pulled in 14 rebounds and Prestly grabbed 11.

“They do a nice job using their post players,” Buchanan coach David Cleveland said. “You have to use your strengths and who wouldn’t try and they do a nice job with that. We were trying to help down in the post and there are times when you have to get into the shooter’s face and help down in the post. It’s not an easy task because they can hit from the outside too.”

Entering the fourth quarter down 54-17 Buchanan’s Pachia Benson and Chelsea Adolph began getting the ball to fall. Each finished the night with 14 points apiece.

“We got our best game out of Pachia tonight. She was our leading rebounder. Hopefully that will lift her confidence,” Cleveland said.

BUCHANAN — It was the same story for the Brandywine varsity boys’ basketball team Friday night at Buchanan.

Sixteen first half turnovers by the Bobcats translated into 26 Buchanan points. The Bucks went on to send Brandywine to its 10th loss of the season, 70-36, in the Lakeland Conference contest.

“We worked on stuff during practice, but we just aren’t as quick and as athletic as these other teams are,” Brandywine coach Nathan Knapp said following the loss. “They put a lot of ball pressure on us and we can’t get that simulation during practice. I’m just smacking my head against a brick wall right now trying to figure it out. You don’t give up you have to find something that is going to work.”

Buchanan quickly gained control of the game from the opening tip-off and there never was a doubt that the Bucks had control of the entire game. Opening the first quarter with a 17-6 advantage the home team pounded the ball inside to their big man, 6-feet-8 junior Jalen Brown, and when it wasn’t Jalen dropping the ball in the hoop it was teammate Savon Brown converting off a steal or Bobcat miscue.

Jalen Brown scored a game-high 18 points, while Savon added 17 and Andrew Hearington contributed to the win with 11.

It was a full team effort for Buchanan as all eight players scored. The Bucks went into the intermission with a 39-13 lead.

“We can get after people,” Buchanan coach Reid McBeth said of his team’s effort. “We didn’t want to get into a half court game and let Frazier get going. We tried to extend the floor and when you do that and Frazier comes down and helps break the press and when he is 80 feet from the basket it is tough for him to score. The kids did a good job with all the distractions tonight with Winterfest and coming off a big win Wednesday over Clay and I just wanted to see what kind of character these guys had. They showed up and played hard and with good effort. We started the game strong and got good contributions from everybody.”

Austin Searles scored 11 points to lead the Bobcats, while Frazier was limited to 10 points.

Buchanan held a 30-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game 55-25.

The win improves Buchanan to 13-5 overall and 7-3 in league play while the Bobcats slip to 7-10 and 1-8 in the conference.
