Big second half helps Rangers run past Bison

NEW BUFFALO — Visiting Cassopolis outscored New Buffalo 40-21 over the final three quarters Tuesday night to pick up a 46-29 non-conference boys’ basketball victory.

The Rangers (7-6) trailed 8-6 after one quarter of play, but grabbed a three-point (18-15) halftime advantage. Cassopolis blew the game open by outscoring the Bison (2-7) 15-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-15 lead into the final eight minutes.

Oliver Fiala scored 11 points and Nate Hartline added 10 for the Rangers.

Jordan Stover led New Buffalo with eight points.

Visiting Cassopolis managed just 14 points through the first three quarters Tuesday night in its 43-24 non-conference loss to New Buffalo in girls’ basketball action.

The Bison led just 11-9 after one quarter of play, but grabbed a 21-14 halftime advantage and then shutout the Rangers in the third quarter to make it a 37-14 contest heading into the final frame.

Reese Ellison had 16 points to lead the Rangers and all scorers.

Lena and Jade Madison both scored 11 points for New Buffalo.

Zechariah Jenkins scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Berrien Springs Shamrocks past Cassopolis in boys’ Lakeland Conference play Friday night, 72-56.

The Rangers led 14-12 after one period of play, but were outscored 19-13 in the second quarter as the Shamrocks took a 31-27 lead and never looked back.

Cassopolis (6-6, 1-5 Lakeland) trailed 52-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Berrien Springs (7-4, 4-2 Lakeland) got 14 points from Jeffrey Gumbo and 11 points from Steven Felusme.

The Rangers were led by Nate Hartline’s 18 points. Austin Los added 14.

A 12-0 start Friday night lifted the Berrien Springs Shamrocks to a 41-32 victory over Cassopolis in girls’ Lakeland Conference basketball play.

Kolby Gillespie scored a game-high 16 point to lead the Shamrocks, who also got 10 points from Stefani Camacho.

Berrien Springs (7-5, 3-4) grabbed a 12-0 lead after one period of play and led 21-4 at halftime.

Cassopolis (6-5, 3-4 Lakeland) came storming back in the second half, outscoring the Shamrocks 28-20. Unfortunately for the Rangers the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Tammy Lee and Reese Ellison both scored 10 points for the Rangers.
