No one was injured in a house fire Monday night at 519 Broadway in Niles.

According to Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb, the only occupant of the house called 911 when she smelled smoke at about 7 p.m.

A Niles police officer responded and shut all the doors, including those to the attic, what Lamb called “a smart move.”

“That helped contain the fire,” he said.

An initial investigation revealed the likely cause of the fire was wiring in the attic.

It took firefighters several hours to contain the fire and ensure it was extinguished, Lamb said.

“The issue with a lot of these (older) homes is they are balloon frame construction,” he said, where each stud is one piece from roof to foundation. In the event of a fire, wall cavities from the foundation to the roof can be an open path for it to spread quickly.

The attic sustained fire damage; the second floor had minor damage.

The Niles Township Fire Department and Southwestern Community Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
