CONSTANTINE — The Dowagiac wrestling team went 0-5 on Saturday at the Constantine Invitational.

“We were even more short-handed than normal as we had some kids gone on family trips for break,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We had two matches where we only lost one match and ended up losing the dual. Again, I think we wrestled pretty good for our age.”

Going undefeated on the day for the Chieftains were Ben Luth, Ryan Smit and Matt Lyle.

No individual results were provided.

Niles wrestling

DANSVILLE — The Niles wrestling team was 4-1 at the Dansville Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings’ lone loss came to No. 6-ranked (Division 4) Dansville, 40-30.

“The key match was at 160 where sophomore Jacob Hill, who wrestled well all day, had Dansville senior Jacob Hause on his back, but couldn’t put him away and ended up losing by a fall,” Niles coach Todd Hesson said. “It was a good dual.”

Niles defeated Marlette 52-24, Athens 48-19, St. Mary’s Catholic 56-18 and Fowlerville 65-18.

Going 5-0 on the day for the Vikings were Tyler Baber (103), Robbie Legus (140), Donte Stevens (145) and Fritz Findesein (152). Going 4-1 were Cole Allison (125), Colin Burandt (130) and James Asmus (215).

“Captains Cole Allison and James Asmus had a good day,” Hesson said. “James had a big last-second win against Dansville and is improving every match and is currently 19-2. It was the first time Donte was at 145-pounds and he wrestled extremely well. He beat a ranked wrestler from Dansville.

“Colin Burandt has had a tough stretch of wrestling as he has wrestled ranked opponents six of his last eight match and moving up a weight class to face them. He was 5-1 against ranked kids this week.”

Findesein and Baber are now 19-2 and 20-1 respectively according to Hesson. The Vikings are 19-2 as they head into the Big 16 Conference Team Duals at the Battle Creek Kellogg Center on Dec. 30.
