Majerek’s Readers World in Niles will welcome another author to Niles for a book signing.

Laurie Assadi, who wrote “Waking from the Nightmare: Giving our Children Optimism,” will be at the store from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Assadi, a limited license psychologist in Kalamazoo, presents a practical journey into the world  of children struggling with depression and mood disorders through telling the stories of several children whom she has treated.

The views and strategies explained in the book offer parents, therapists and other adults tools to deal more effectively with children and teens suffering from mood disorders.

“This book functions like a translator, interpreting confusing and disturbing behaviors that often leave the adults feeling just as defenseless and despairing as the children they need to guide through their darkest hours,” said psychotherapist and author Sari Solden.

In her book, Assadi tries to create a sense of optimism, a determination of spirit and the unending potential for recovery and healing. Assadi goes beyond behavioral management, consequences and tough love. Instead she looks at personal, real-life accounts and emotional treatment methods for depression, sadness, pessimism and illogical thinking.

Anyone who purchases a book at Majerek’s will also receive a free CD titled “Who’s on First? Living and Loving with ADD.” This CD goes inside the workings of the ADD brain and is a mini-survival guide to understanding why people with attention deficit disorder do what they do.
