CASSOPOLIS — Jesseka McGowan is 17 years old, but she already has two drug-related convictions on her record.
The Niles teen’s most recent offense, possession of heroine, ended in a two-year probation sentence, handed down Friday at Cass County Circuit Court. McGowan will spend the first 90 days on tether.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Frank Machnik recommended a jail sentence.
“She needs jail time,” he said. “Otherwise she will learn the lesson that she can get away with anything with a slap on the wrist.”
For her part, McGowan apologized and said she just got a job, which she starts on Monday, and is starting to turn her life around.
“I realize this is not the life I want to live,” she said.
McGowan had just gotten off probation for a juvenile drug conviction when she was found in possession of heroine in July.
“You’re only 17 and your life is already in a downward spiral,” Judge Michael Dodge said. “I hope you consider this a strong reality check and wake up call.”
