St. Mary Catholic Central wins Class C state title

BATTLE CREEK — Going 9-0 in the biggest three matches of the season led Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central to the Class C state volleyball title on Saturday.

After blanking Brandywine in the quarterfinals, the Kestrels swept Reese 3-0 in the semifinals at the Kellogg Arena and on Saturday, defeated St. Louis 25-14, 29-27 and 25-16 to win the state championship.

Sarah Brent had a team-high 12 kills for SMCC, which also got six kills from Michelle DeMarco and five kills each from McKenzie Todd, Megan Satterfield and Sydney Maddux.

Bailey Windham had 18 assists for the Kestrels (40-12-2) and Kesley Dimeff 11. Dimeff also led the team in digs with 14. DeMarco added 13 digs and five blocks.

Tia Keeler had four service aces.

St. Louis (53-16-1) was led by Danielle Morris with 13 kills and 13 digs. Allison smith had 25 assists and Rachel O’Boyle 16 digs. Korynne Perry finished with 12 digs.

In the Class A state final, Bloomfield Hills Marian defeated Farmington Hills Mercy 25-18, 25-13 and 25-23.

The Class B title went to Fruitport with a 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-13 victory over North Branch.

In Class D, Battle Creek St. Philip defeated Plymouth Academy 25-12, 25-16 and 25-10 to earn its fifth consecutive state championship and its sixth since 2005.
