ALBION — The Albion College football team was rewarded for tying for second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tuesday as it placed 10 student-athletes on the all-league teams.

Senior punter Mychal Galla (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central), senior defensive lineman Jeremy Green (Chattanooga, Tenn./The McCallie School), junior cornerback Chris Greenwood (Detroit/Martin Luther King), sophomore left tackle Shane Jesiel (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) and sophomore running back Clinton Orr (Buchanan/Buchanan) will receive plaques designating their selection to the first team.

Senior defensive linemen Neil Copeland (Livonia/Franklin) and Austin Rodgers (Dexter/Chelsea), junior receiver J.C. Cruse (Detroit/Grosse Pointe South), sophomore offensive lineman Josh Phillips (Commerce Township/Walled Lake Northern), and junior tight end Dave Wunderlich (Troy/Troy) were awarded second team status.

Orr became the first MIAA back to rush for more than 1,000 yards in league games. He gashed opposing defenses for 1,030 yards and eight touchdowns on 179 carries. When his 214 yards on kickoff returns and 204 receiving yards were factored in, Orr led the league in all purpose yards with 1,448.

Galla finished the season as the MIAA’s top punter with a 40.9-yard average. Opponents took possession inside the 20-yard line after 11 of his punts, and seven sailed at least 50 yards.

Green’s 12 tackles for loss tied him at the top of the league standings in the statistical category. He was also fourth in the league in quarterback sacks with four.

Greenwood was second in the MIAA in interceptions with four, and he set the tone for Albion’s 38-21 win over Adrian College when he returned an interception on the Bulldogs’ first drive for a touchdown.

As left tackle, Jesiel paved the way for Orr’s league-record season. Jesiel and Phillips anchored an offensive line that yielded the fewest sacks — three — in the league.

Copeland and Rodgers also ranked among the league leaders in sacks. Copeland wrapped up four solo and two assisted sacks for a total 37 yards, while Rodgers collected three solo and one assisted sacks.

Cruse was Albion’s big play threat on offense, often running routes vertically down the field. He hauled in 20 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns in the six league games.

Wunderlich, who began his collegiate career as a receiver, caught four passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in league play.

Former Cassopolis standout Paul Curtis was a first team selection as a wide receiver for Trine University.
