Martha’s life began on Sept. 22, 1922, in Arco, Minn., daughter of Jonathan and Jorun Jonathan.

She was married 63 years to John R. “Jack” Garland, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Jack and Martha were married at Whitmore Lake.

Martha was employed by Michigan Tube and the Glenwood Inn for several years and retired as a claims adjuster with the State of Michigan.

She was past president of the Dowagiac Elks Antlerettes.

Martha loved to golf, knit and play bridge with her family.

Her loving family includes: her children, Margaret “Peggy” (Ed) Friccius of Cassopolis and John D. Garland of Dowagiac; grandchildren, Quentin Garland, Tiffany Russell, Tim Friccius, Dana Wohrley, Molly Garland, Jimmy Garland, Sandy Garland, Jenny Garland and Kelly Garland; and one sister, June Ramsey of Texas.

Martha passed away on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Lakeland Specialty Care Center in Berrien Springs.

She is preceded in death by: her husband; a son, Richard Garland; a grandson, David Garland; and 16 siblings.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to American Cancer Society.
