An Edwardsburg pilot received minor injuries after crashing his airplane in Mason Township Sunday.

Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that at approximately 4:50 p.m., deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a plane crash in Mason Township.

A single-engine Piper PA17 piloted by Scott Duck, 45, crashed into a field on Mason Street near Christiana Lake Road. The pilot said that shortly after taking off from a private grass air strip the plane experienced engine failure. Duck attempted to turn the plane around forĀ an emergency landing when it lost altitude and crashed into a field just east of the air strip.

Both Duck and a passenger, Floyd Johnson, 83, of Niles, received only minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Assisting at the scene was Porter Township ambulance and fire department.

This incident remains under investigation, which has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration South Bend Office.
