It’s tourney time

It may be hard to believe but the Michigan High School Athletic Association state tournaments kick into gear next week.

The regional tennis tournaments will be the first postseason competition for our area high schools.

Niles will compete in the Division 2 Regional at Portage Northern on Thursday.

Edwardsburg will compete in the Division 3 Regional being held at St. Joseph, while Dowagiac, Brandywine, Buchanan and Cassopolis will all be playing in the Division 4 Regional hosted by the Bucks at Leeper Park on Friday, May 21.

District golf
The district golf tournaments will be played the following week at a variety of sites.
Dowagiac will play in the Division 3 District hosted by Constantine at Island Hills in Centreville on May 27.

Buchanan and Brandywine will also take part in the Division 3 tournament.

Niles will be at Angels Crossing in Vicksburg for the Division 2 District on May 27.
Cassopolis will play in the Division 4 District at Clearbrook in Saugatuck.

Baseball
It probably didn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone Dowagiac drew Lakeshore in the opening round of the Division 2 District Tournament being hosted by the Lancers.

Lakeshore and Dowagiac will play at 4:30 p.m. in Stevensville on June 1.

The winner advances to face Edwardsburg on Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m. in the first of two semifinals.

Niles received a first round bye and will face St. Joseph in the other semifinal on June 5, which is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.

The title game is slated for 3 p.m.

Defending district champion Brandywine will be joined by Buchanan and Cassopolis in Berrien Springs for the Class C District Tournament.

The Bucks and Rangers received a first round bye and will face each other on June 5 at 10 a.m.

Brandywine will play Bridgman on June 1 at 5 p.m. with the winner taking on Berrien Springs in the other semifinal on June 5 at 12:30 p.m.

The title game is slated for 3 p.m.

Softball
Perennial district contenders Dowagiac and Lakeshore will meet in a pre-district contest on June 1 at 4:30 p.m. in Stevensville.

The winner advances to face Edwardsburg on June 5 in the second semifinal at noon.

St. Joseph and defending district champion Niles will meet in the first semifinal on June 5 at 10 a.m.

The championship game is set for 2 p.m.

At Berrien Springs, defending champion Buchanan and Cassopolis both received first round byes and will meet in the second semifinal in the Division 3 District at noon.

Brandywine and Bridgman will play a pre-district contest on June 1 in Berrien Springs at 5 p.m.

The winner takes on the host Shamrocks at 10 a.m. on June 5.

The title game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

District soccer
Dowagiac, Brandywine, Edwardsburg and Buchanan will all compete in the same district tournament in Paw Paw.

The host Redskins drew a first round bye and will face the winner of the Brandywine-South Haven match, which will be played on June 1 in Niles at 5 p.m.

Dowagiac will host Edwardsburg in the other semifinal, which will also be played at 5 p.m. on June 1.

Coloma at Buchanan is the other first round match up on June 1. That match will begin at 5 p.m.

The Brandywine-South Haven winner will face host Paw Paw in the semifinals on June 3 at 5 p.m.

The winners of the Buchanan-Coloma and Dowagiac-Edwardsburg matches will meet in the other semifinal on June 3 at 6:45 p.m.

The championship match will be held on June 5 at 11 a.m.
