Mattawan, Three Rivers, Sturgis win math meet

Mattawan won the Middle School Math Meet at Southwestern Michigan College Tuesday.

Three Rivers and Sturgis finished second and third, respectively.

Mattawan accumulated 178.71 points, to 166.3 for Three Rivers and 154.06 for Sturgis.

Coaches of the top three teams accepted trophies, plus the first two won drawings at SMC’s Dale A. Lyons Building done by Rod Snow.

Three hundred middle school students from 20 districts in Cass, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties attended the event coordinated by the intermediate school districts.

Sixty teams of five students took part in the regional contest, including Dowagiac, Cassopolis and Edwardsburg from Cass County; Burr Oak, Centreville, Colon, Constantine, Mendon, Nottawa, Sturgis, Three Rivers and White Pigeon from St. Joseph County; and Bangor, Gobles, Hartford, Lawrence, Lawton, Mattawan, Paw Paw and South Haven from Van Buren County.

“What a great day for mathematics,” said Brian Wood of Lewis Cass ISD, who coordinated the event with Laura Howe of St. Joseph County ISD and Tonda Boothby of Van Buren ISD.

Problems were prepared by and scored by members of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics led by past president Judy Wheeler.
