After two seasons at the helm of the Dowagiac girls’ basketball program, Dick O’Day has resigned.

The Chieftains were district champions the year before O’Day took over for Greg Blomgren and posted a 34-12 record in the two years before he became head coach.

But the Chieftains struggled the past two years and had just a 13-29 record under O’Day.

“It’s really time for me to move on as I feel I have let people down by not moving the program forward,”  O’Day said.

O’Day came to Dowagiac from South Bend Trinity where he had posted a 62-12 record in three years and won a pair of Christian Division state titles.

Dowagiac athletic director Greg Younger announced the resignation Monday evening.

He noted that he hopes that the next coach will also be a teacher in the district.

O’Day was not an instructor at Dowagiac.

Younger also noted that he would like to see more involvement from the players in the program outside of the basketball season.

“I would like to thank coach O’Day for the effort that he put into our program and I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” Younger said.
