Chieftains fall to South Haven

SOUTH HAVEN – The Dowagiac cross country teams were swept by host South Haven on Tuesday afternoon in a Wolverine Conference meet.

In the boys’ race, Dowagiac grabbed two of the top three positions, but fell to the Rams 23-38.

Mark Cornett of South Haven was the overall winner with a time of 17:58.

Dowagiac’s Kasey Proshwitz and Chris Gantt finished second and third respectively with times of 18:08 and 18:11.

“Kasey and Chris finally put together a nice race on the same day,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “We knew the rest of our boys would need to run in the 21s to have a shot and it just didn’t happen.”

Matt Ernzen ran 11th with a time of 22:50, while Ryne Wilming was 12th (22:51), Brandon Wilson 13th (23:18), Tony Brooks 15th (23:45), Tyler Cross 16th (23:47) and Ryan Daly 17th (23:49).

The Dowagiac girls’ team was defeated by the Lady Rams 15-48.

Grace Carwel of South Haven was the overall winner with a time of 20:50.

The Chieftains’ Kelsey Cleveland grabbed the top finish for Dowagiac as she was seventh wtih a time of 26:25.

Samantha Mathews was eighth (26:55), Leana Allen 10th (27:21), Amanda Hassle 11th (27:29), Kristina Bunn 12th (27:34), Kaya Yakim 13th (29:18), Marissa Tidey 15th (30:04), Rebecca Luth 16th (30:09), Corrine Kasper 18th (32:40), Michala Froehlich 19th (32:44), Allison Hassle 20th (32:45) and Sarah Hassle 21st (33:31)
