Hazardous waste collection date set

BERRIEN SPRINGS – Berrien County residents can bring household chemicals to the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Wednesday, Aug. 12 in Berrien Springs. The collection runs 3 to 7 p.m. in the Apple Valley Market parking lot, across from the Youth Fair Grounds.

Accepted items include most home, garden, and garage chemicals such as used motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, antifreeze, varnish, oil-based paint, batteries, lawn care chemicals, cleaners, home medical waste/sharps, mercury containing items, and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Latex paint will not be accepted, nor are propane tanks for gas grills, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, tires, appliances of any kind, and electronics.

Residents can exchange their mercury fever thermometer for a free, digital one at this collection. Double bag the mercury fever thermometer in zip-lockable baggies for safe transport.
