NILES – It was approved at Monday night's Niles Township meeting that the old Shell Gas Station, located at the former Eastgate Shopping Center, can and will be demolished.
According to Clerk Marge Durm-Hiatt, the building belongs to the township and is a liability. She explained that the gas tanks were taken out some time ago, and that just the building itself remains.
"We're hoping they can start taking it down soon if the weather cooperates," she said.
In other news, the township approved to accept the bid for a 15-horse power vacuum system, which will be used by the Township Fire Department and the City of Niles' Fire Department.
"This system was expensive for just us, so it's nice that both fire departments were able to go in together as they both can use it," Hiatt said.
