NILES – A Niles man died after being struck while crossing South 11th Street, near Chestnut Lane in Niles Township Sunday evening.
According to the Berrien County Sheriff's report, James Lewis Beadle, 41, walked into the path of a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Jack Vandenboom, 27, of South Bend, Ind.
The Vandenboom vehicle was unable to avoid striking Beadle, the report said, adding rain and dark clothing made it difficult for Beadle to be seen. Vandenboom and his wife did not report any injuries.
Witnesses at the scene advised officers that Beadle had just walked out into traffic. Beadle attempted to cross the five lane road in heavy traffic. There is no cross walk at this location and this area is not well lit, officers added.
At 5:42 p.m., Deputy Donald A. Lighthart, Jr. responded to the scene.
Deputy Rich Albers and the BCSD Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and this investigation is continuing.
It does not appear that alcohol or speed is a factor in this accident.
