Veterans Day not to be forgotten

NILES – On Sunday, at 11 a.m. members of the American Legion Post 26 in Niles will hold a Veterans Day memorial at Riverfront Park. Post Chaplain Fred Smith, along with Niles Mayor Mike McClausin, will give a speech. The firing squad will play taps and the Rev. Smith will close the ceremony.
After the event, everyone is invited back to the American Legion, 1707 Miller Drive, for a traditional Veterans Day dinner of cornbread and beans.
"Post 26 has been doing this for Veterans since the day it opened its doors. This is a great way for people to honor the Veteran's and for them to be honored," Commander of Post 26 Tim Fenton said.
BUCHANAN – Theodore J. "Dutch" Van Kirk, navigator of the Enola Gay, will be a special guest speaker at the Buchanan American Legion on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 and 7 p.m. Van Kirk will also be at the Buchanan High School Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
CASSOPOLIS – VFW Post 10704 will gather at the flagpole at the old 1899 Courthouse in Cassopolis at the 11th hour on the 11th day, Sunday, Nov. 11.
Following the event at the courthouse, they will perform a Veterans Day ceremony at the Cass County Council on Aging at noon. The ceremony will commemorate the service of all veterans. Everyone is welcome to attend. A buffet will be served at the VFW immediately following.

DOWAGIAC – American Legion Post 563 will observe Veterans Day at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at its post, 806 N. Orchard St.
BERRIEN SPRINGS – Lest We Forget, Inc., is sponsoring a Veterans Day program on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Howard Performing Arts Center at Andrews University in Berrien Springs. The program will feature Bob Myers portrayal of a Niles Civil War soldier and the Southshore Concert Band. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and advanced tickets are available at Martins Super Market in Niles and Wisner-Beck Drug Store in Buchanan.
EAU CLAIRE – "2007 Salute to Our Veterans" will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Eau Claire High School Gymnasium. A complimentary dinner especially made for all veterans and one guest will be served prior to the program from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The public is invited at 7 p.m.
