NILES – At the Niles City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 22, Mayor Michael T. McCauslin presented executive director John Stauffer with a proclamation of support for the United Way. Included in the proclamation was a call to all citizens to help those less fortunate in the community and declaring "November 2007 as The United Way of Greater Niles Charitable Giving Month."
Stauffer thanked the Mayor and reminded everyone that all dollars raised stay in the local area.
"I want to encourage everyone to please make a pledge this year. The Plym Foundation has issued a $5,000 challenge grant if we make our goal this year," said Stauffer.
Stauffer also stated "I have learned there are three reasons why people do not give to the United Way:
1. They were never asked. I am here asking for your support.
2. The second reason people don't support United Way is that they have misinformation, misconceptions or lack information. I personally welcome any and all questions – but I want everyone to know the basics:
We are one of over 1,300 independent United Ways. We are a local nonprofit, with a local volunteer board of directors, and all donated dollars stay in the Niles area.
3. The third reason they do not give to the United Way is that they used to work someplace they felt forced to give or it was expected that they give. That is wrong. Giving to the United Way is voluntary and it is a choice, and it should always be that way."
"On behalf of the neediest in our community we ask that everyone give generously this year so we can reach our goal, and raise the level of support to local charities" said Stauffer. Companies are encouraged to offer a voluntary payroll deduction option to support United Way.
More than $10 million has been raised for local charities by the United Way of Greater Niles since its founding in 1953. Donations may be sent to the United Way of Greater Niles at P.O. Box 375, Niles, MI 49120 or made by Visa or MasterCard online at www.unitedewayniles.com
