NILES – The Niles Adult Education program has given many residents an opportunity they may not have had anywhere else. It's a chance for people to start over again and prove they can and want to succeed. Unfortunately, those wanting to become involved with the program often aren't sure when to sign up or how to go about doing it.
"We found that adults did not think about registering for class until after kids were in school and some came in after we closed registration," Niles Community Schools Superintendent Doug Law explained.
Fall enrollment for Niles Adult Education is set for Monday, Aug. 20 at the Westside Administrative Center, 111 Spruce St. Enrollment times are Monday through Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 4 and are offered Monday through Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enrollment will continue on an ongoing basis.
Adult Education offers high school diploma completion, GED and classes in basic reading, writing and math skills. Anyone who needs to complete their high school requirements is urged to visit the Niles Adult Education office and sign up for classes.
"This is a fantastic program that provides a great service to our community. There are some amazing success stories with this program," Law added.
Due to credits awarded for parenting and work experience and credits that can be earned through testing, many students find that they are closer to completing the requirements for graduation than they thought.
There is no charge for the classes and all materials are provided. For more information call 684-4480 or stop in between the hours of 4 and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
