Pedestrian hit by car suffers serious injuries

NILES – A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a 1998 Ford on Thursday at Gary Court and M-51 in Niles Township.
The Michigan State Police Post in Niles reported the incident happened in the north bound lane after the pedestrian attempted to cross the road from east to west.
The driver of the Ford, Daniel Wise, 18 of South Bend, Ind., attempted to avoid the pedestrian by swerving into the left turn lane, according to the report. He was unable to avoid the pedestrian, who continued to move toward the center of the road.
The pedestrian, who was not identified, was thrown to the pavement and taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.
The police report said in regards to the pedestrian, alcohol may have been a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers were assisted by deputies from the Niles Township Road Patrol and SMCAS of Niles.
