NILES – Former Buchanan girls' varsity soccer coach Joanne Schau has been named the new head coach at Niles High School in the upcoming school year.
Schau, who is also the assistant for Niles' junior varsity volleyball team, will replace former head coach Denise Peters, who resigned at the end of last season. Peters headed the varsity program for the past nine seasons.
Schau was unavailable for comment Friday afternoon, but Niles High School athletic director John Danaher said he is excited to have her on board.
"It's nice to be able to keep her in the building, since she teaches and coaches here. I'm also excited to see what she does with our program. You really have to step up your game coming from Buchanan's conference (Lakeland Athletic Conference) to ours. The competition is a lot more intense, but I think she will do very well and I'm looking forward to what she will offer to our program," Danaher said.
Schau has spent the past three seasons with Buchanan.
