NILES – More than a foot of new snow on the Niles area has put the city's road crews out onto their primary winter task – clearing the streets.
Despite the amount of snow dropped on the area, the Niles Street Department is keeping on top of the job.
"Basically, everything has gone very smooth," said Kenny King, superintendent of the street department.
King said because of the constant snowfall, the crews have been concentrating on the "main roads" – 13th Street, 17th Street, Lake Street and Wayne Street in particular.
Now that the snow has stopped falling, King said his crews should have the rest of the city's streets cleared by this afternoon. He also said city residents can help the street department by moving vehicles to driveways or parking lots.
King said 12 workers are out clearing streets.
"We try to do the best we can for the community," King said.
