NILES – Area motorists were granted a symbolic reprieve this week as the price of a gallon of gasoline dropped below $2 Wednesday.
As of Friday morning, the lowest price found at gas stations in Niles was $1.989 a gallon. The last time a Niles gas station was below $2 was on Oct. 15, when Murphy's USA on South 11th Street was selling a gallon at $1.999.
Despite being almost a dollar a gallon cheaper than the average price per gallon last summer, motorists are not flocking to gas stations in droves to fill up. Jan Kuhl of Niles, while filling up Thursday at the Admiral service station on Chicago Road, said she does not try to anticipate decreases in gas prices, nor does she pump portions of gas at a time in case costs drop a few days later.
"I always fill up," Kuhl said.
