NILES – The Niles golf team will once again be selling Buick Open golf tickets this year to help raise funds for the high school golf program.
This is the sixth year the team will be selling tickets to the Open, which takes place at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc.
The team receives 100 tickets, in which they can sell to relatives, friends or anyone interested, at a very reasonable price of $20. The program then gets to keep $10 for every ticket they sell, with the other $10 going back to the Buick Open.
Last year, the golf program sold 143 tickets, which meant $1,430 went into its fundraising account and allowed the varsity and junior varsity teams to purchase new golf bags, wind jackets and golf balls.
Varsity head coach Greg Gunder said that the money also went to meals on the road, practice rounds before tournaments and range balls.
The team was hoping to go to Traverse City last year, however, a schedule mix-up cancelled the plans. The team was able to spend two nights on the road, though, with food and lodging paid for by the monies raised.
"Next year, we are hoping to get to Traverse City and also have the junior varsity do an overnight," Gunder said.
