St. Joseph tough battle for Ring Lardner hoops

NILES – St. Joseph put up a battle Wednesday for all four of the Ring Lardner basketball teams.
The seventh grade Gold team fell to the Bears, 22-20, while the Blue team won, 47-3. The eighth grade Blue team won 37-26, while the Gold team won 47-45 in double overtime.
Seventh grade
The seventh grade Gold boys basketball team lost a tough battle in overtime at St. Joe on Wednesday, 22-20.
The Vikings rallied from an eight point halftime deficit. St. Joe hit a long 3-pointer with under 10 seconds left to tie the score. The Vikings had an opportunity to seal the win at the free throw line with no time left on the clock, but missed both free throws.
St. Joe scored the only basket of overtime and held on for the victory.
Quinton Irby led the Vikings with eight points, Dallas Munger followed with six, while Sam Clark and Brandon Partee each had three points.
The loss drops the team team's record to 8-3.
Come out and support the seventh grade Gold team for their final game of the season Monday at home against Lakeshore at 4 p.m.
The Ring Lardner seventh grade Blue team defeated St. Joe on Wednesday, 47-3.
"A great effort by the starters set the tone and established our game plan early, and Matthew McLaughlin did a nice job leading our team," coach Steve Karsten said.
Myles Busby led all scorers with 12 points and Austin Parks added 10 for the Vikings. Zach Fillwock added nine points off the bench for the Vikings.
"I thought our reserves played extremely well today too, and I am really proud of the way Zack Fillwock, Austin Bertschy, Seth and Taylor Purucker and Martell Miller came in and played good basketball for us. It shows how much we have grown as a team thus far," Karsten added.
With the win the Vikings record stands at 11-0. The Gold team will host Lakeshore on Monday at Ring Lardner, with a 5 p.m. tip-off
Eighth grade
The Ring Lardner eighth grade Blue basketball team completed a season sweep over St Joe 37-26.
The Viking's half court offense and pressure defense were too much for the St. Joe Bears.
Niles was lead by Nick Lucero with 12 points and Trey Nichols with 11 points.
The Vikings are back in action on Monday at Lakeshore.
The Niles eighth grade Gold team won Wednesday by defeating St. Joseph 47-45 in double overtime.
In the second overtime with only four seconds remaining, Jonathan Eddy went coast-to-coast and nailed an 8-foot jumper to give the Vikes the win.
Eddy also led all scores with 22 points, following with Ron Smith with nine points.
The eighth grade Gold team is back in action Monday at Lakeshore.
